Fully God, Fully Man
Fully God, Fully Man
Yesterday I saw a small boy singing “Jesus Loves Me This I know”. I have always loved to hear children’s voices sing songs to the Lord. The sweetness, the innocents. Children believe you when you say that Jesus loves them. They don’t question why or how or if they are good enough. Or who Jesus is. They just trust their parents.
Last night we watched season 5 of the Chosen. One thing that caught my attention was that just as Jesus was about to make his triumphant ride on the donkey into Jerusalem, Jesus stopped. He had a brief look of horror on his face and he froze. That, per se, is not in the Bible but in order to make a movie out of the bible, they had to take a little artistic license, and it seems likely to me that this could have happened. Jesus was fully man, and Jesus was fully God. He knew His father’s plan. We do know that because in Luke 22:42, Jesus says, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” He knew the absolute horror of what was to come. The pain that no man could live through. The humiliation. Degradation. So, it seems plausible that He would have stopped in His tracks for a moment. There were 2 other places with similar reactions. You could see the look on His face of fear. Yes, He was fully God. But because He was fully human, he could know fear. I believe that one very important reason that God sent Him to earth was so that we would know that He experienced everything we feel. Who could call on a God who didn’t understand or sympathize? But we can.
Jesus Loves Me This I Know. For the Bible tells me so, and it does, in so many places!! But none so clear as the parts that talk about the Passion of Christ. His trial, His torture, carrying His own cross after being beaten with in an inch of His life, and then still going to the cross in the most painful death known to man.
Matt 24:53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”
Fully Man, Fully God. He could have had more than 72,000 Angels at his side instantly, but He chose to die for us. Each of us! I believe that Jesus had a choice. He knew He could call on His Father who would send legions of Angels. But He loved us. Jesus Loves me, this I know.
Most Precious Father, thank you for your son, who paid a price we could never pay. Amen.
