Why Me, Lord?
Kris Kristopherson died recently. He was a country singer; He led a very impressive life. He graduated from school playing football and Rugby. He attended college and in 1960 he joined the Army and became a helicopter pilot. He later flew helicopters for oil rigs. He was offered a position as an English teacher at West Point, but went to Nashville instead, where he wrote and sang dozens of hit songs and acted in movies. Among others he sang with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. During those days he partied and drank. If you don’t know any of these guys, google Kris Kristopherson tells story of how he wrote “Why Me Lord”. He gives his testimony of going to church, which he never did, raising his hand and then walking to the front to give his life to Jesus, and no one was more surprised than he was. His story is raw and real just as the words to this song are. He wrote this song right after accepting the Lord. Lately these words put everything into perspective for me. Because I have done nothing to deserve the goodness that He has shown me.
[Verse 1]
Why me Lord?
What have I ever done
To deserve even one
Of the pleasures I've known?
Tell me, Lord
What did I ever do
That was worth lovin' you
Or the kindness you've shown?
[Chorus]
Lord help me, Jesus
I've wasted it so help me, Jesus
I know what I am
But now that I know
That I've needed you so help me, Jesus
My soul's in your hand
[Verse 2]
Try me, Lord
If you think there's a way
I can try to repay
All I've taken from you
Maybe, Lord
I can show someone else
What I've been through myself
On my way back to you
(Chorus)
Lord, help us to always realize that we are not worthy. That we have done nothing to earn your love and grace. In His Precious Name, Amen.
