Bullet Proof

Ben Carson, world renown pediatric surgeon, one time presidential hopeful and Christian, tells the story of George Washington during the French/Indian war. Washington was a courier for General Braddock, one of the English Generals. All of the couriers were killed and Washington had 2 horses shot right beneath him. He had 4 bullet holes in his jacket, he had bullet fragments in his hair, but no flesh wounds. Some years later, but before he was president, an old Indian chief who was near death asked to be brought before George Washington before he died. He said, I must meet this man. So, when he had Mr Washington’s attention he said to him, “Sir, I am an excellent marksman. I shot you 17 times. My men shot you many more times, yet you never suffered a wound. I told my men to stop wasting bullets. I just wanted to meet this man who was protected by the Great Presence Above.”   Ben finished the story by saying that this story had been in all of our history books until it became politically incorrect. Ben is said to be one of the most intelligent people on earth. Most certainly very well read. I found this story to be very interesting on several levels.

Probably one of the most interesting things about this story is the obvious. How could this mere mortal have so many rounds of ammo shot at him and still have NO wounds. As I thought about this story, I thought about how many times God has protected me. SOOOOO many times!! I am sure that we all can say that and there are probably plenty of times that he saved me and I had no idea.

Psalm 37:40 The Lord helps them and delivers them;  he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,  because they take refuge in him.

Joshua 24:17 t was the Lord our God himself who brought us and our parents up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled.

Psalm 5:11 But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.

The Bible is full of verses that tell us of God’s protection and refuge. We are living in a time that makes us all want to go hide under the bed sometimes. Yet, it’s hard to open the bible without running across a promise of God’s to His people. Granted, somethings are big and scary, but the fact is, God is bigger than any of the things the world can throw at us.

Psalms 4:8

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Lord, we know your promises. Thank you for all that you do for us. Help us to not be surprised when you do keep us safe. Just help us to be mindful and always give you the glory! Amen.
