It seems that we have been subjected to never-ending advertisements for political candidates over the last several weeks. I have seen ads for candidates seeking elected office ranging from President of the United States, Congressional offices, state legislators, and of course the countless ads for the constitutional amendment about the state income tax. While I do not know the outcome of tomorrow’s election, at least I know that the ads will likely stop soon. In Biblical times, most governments did not include elected leaders, but rather most nations had monarchies, so the Bible does not offer specific guidance on how we should approach voting for our political leaders.

However, Paul teaches us in Romans 13:1-7 that we should be subject to government authorities. This is not because the government has done anything special to deserve our respect, but because God has given these people authority by placing them in office. Romans 13:1. Paul specifically tells us in that verse that there is no authority, except that which comes from God. Paul was writing to Christians in Rome, who were often executed for their belief in God. If there were ever people who should consider resisting the government, it would have been Christians living in the Roman empire. Paul teaches that resisting authorities is actually resisting “the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.” Romans 13:2. If we do what is good, we do not have to fear authorities. Romans 13:3. Paul teaches that rulers are “God’s minister” that will “execute wrath on him who practices evil.” Romans 13:4. We should obey the government “not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake.” Romans 13:5. Paul closes this passage by instructing us to render to all their due, including taxes, customs, fear, and honor. Romans 13:7. While we may be disappointed in the outcome of some races in tomorrow’s election, we can take comfort in knowing that God has chosen these people to serve his purposes. We should also continue to pray for our elected officials, and encourage them to seek God’s guidance for the decisions they make in office. Also, if you have not already voted, please take the time to head to your polling place tomorrow.
