"What's The Apple in Your Eye?"

Fall is here and with it comes the beautiful change in color of leaves, the good feeling a campfire brings, and apples galore. So many are harvesting apples and baking things such as apple pies, apple sauce (I think My Sister’s Lil Donut Shoppe should offer homemade apple sauce, but that’s another story), and much more. I know there are plenty of wonderful cooks at Helmar and I hope they aren’t holding back on those homemade apple pies. COVID or not, I’ll take homemade pies any day of the week! Apples are also used in apple cider, apple cider donuts and caramel apples. What else do apples make you think of? An apple-a-day keeps the doctor away? I doubt it, but ask Dr. Fred or Dr. Beth. Why did students always give apples to teachers? What did Johnny Appleseed really do? Not sure about those either, but apples do make my eyes glisten when I see them covered in chocolate and caramel!

Deutoronomy 32:10
He found him in a desert land,
and in the howling waste of the wilderness;
he encircled him, he cared for him,
he kept him as the apple of his eye.

Psalm 17:8
Keep me as the apple of your eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings,
From the wicked who do me violence,
my deadly enemies who surround me.

Proverbs 7:1-2
My son, keep my words
and treasure up my commandments with you;
Keep my commandments and like;
keep my teaching as the apple of your eye;

In Deutoronomy 32, Moses is speaking to the Israelites and we can see that the Lord took care of them because they were precious to Him (they were the apple of his eye). In Psalm 17, David knows that the Lord offers protection to those who are precious to Him. In Proverbs 7, God is telling us to keep His word close and keep it precious. We are all precious in God’s eyes and He gave us His word to guide us and protect us. God’s word is more than just apple cider or a delicious caramel apple, but I do take it for granted so often. Next time you take a bite out of an apple, whether it’s coated in caramel or not, whether it’s in a pie or sauce, think of how you are the precious “apple in His eye.” What’s the apple in your eye?
